Fullasa, Ethiopia

What so ever you do to the least of my brothers that you do unto me (Mt 25:40). We, the sisters of the Fullasa community, are delighted to put into practice this Word of God, through the works of mercy, training ourselves to become mother, sister and friend to the neediest. The people, in fact, call us ‘innu’, which means mother. We live this mission in different ways. We gather the women of our zone and we empower them to become good mothers in their homes. Through our visits to the families, we came in touch with their daily struggles and do our best to assist them, by giving education to the children, helping the youth with higher education, inviting them to repair their houses and providing food items, medicines, clothes, water and scholastic materials.

With the help of the Missionaries of Charity sisters, we take care of dying patients. Recognizing our dedication in our clinic, patients come from far away. Thanks to the new modality of formation and the consequent changes of mentality within the sisters, people understood that ‘we work together’. In fact, when they communicate their needs to a sister, they tell her to «discuss in the community and then give us the answer». It is a great joy for us that five girls from Fullasa, as soon as they finished the high school final exam, expressed their desire to consecrate their life to the Lord to serve the needy.

We feel ‘mothers’ to many, especially a two-year-old orphan child who was malnourished and used to go to the houses in search of food. Now, comforted by our attention and the motherly approach he feels secure and safe. He comes to us for his daily meals, but also to meet us and then he returns to his relatives. Before leaving, he greets us with a broad and grateful smile. Many people come to our door daily with various needs especially to get some food. In our nursery school, we offer a meal to the poor children to satisfy their hungry stomachs, at least a meal per day. Remarkable is also our catechism classes in the parish school and the various pastoral activities in our parish and in the seventy-two substations. Among these, the group of children «Marian Sena» gather every evening to pray the Rosary. We are very happy to carry out these services in which we are helped by many persons and sustained by the Lord to continue to «live in charity and for charity».
