NEKEMTE (ETHIOPIA): SCHOOL GOLDEN JUBILEE

God’s plan for humanity is often surprising. He leads persons in history to fulfil the plan He has for them. We, sisters of charity were invited to the mission of Nekemte, in Ethiopia, seven years ago to take over the management of the Catholic school «Kidane Mehiret» which comprises kindergarten, primary and higher secondary school. The mission was started by Comboni missionaries in 1973, later it was handed over to the Franciscan missionaries, then to the diocesan priests and finally to us who had the honour of celebrating the golden jubilee on 6 October. The day started with the thanksgiving Eucharistic Celebration and followed by the programmes of the students, to honour the former directors, teachers and ex-students, viewing the memories of the past through videos and photo galleries at the end of which they offered the Jubilee souvenir. The ceremony, thanks to the funds available, has also included a sharing gesture distributing educational materials to the poor students of the school and of the village. The mayor of the city sent a message of thanks worded as follows: sincere appreciation for the contribution in providing quality educational service; to enable our country on this level, the role of this school is significant enough. The students attended this school have obtained a bright future. We are happy to work in this school at this historical moment and we wish to continue our service with selfless commitment and professional competence to improve the quality of education in Nekemte, and in the surroundings, in Ethiopia.
