help), and so I beg you, if you approve of what I think, to order
it as an obedience, because my pride is so subtle that it will
find pasture everywhere, even where it meets only with misery
and reasons to be humbled.
I beg you to take into account how harmful my pride is, and I
am sure you will order me to remain in the lowest place.
In this hurry I beg you not to act according to the
intention of asking Catterina to go and see the Parish Priest.
She is in deep distress at the moment; what Father Dò said
was enough to worry her and upset her even physically though
Fr. Dò praised her intentions and assured her of his support -
even if indirectly, not to raise the suspicions of Lady
1
Bartolomea .
Please wait a bit longer, Father. I feel it is prudent to take that
step only when the transactions for the division of the property
have been dealt with.
Meanwhile, not to waste time, you could speak to the
Parish Priest, tell him what you think and discuss the matter
with him, but for the time being please spare Catterina;
otherwise I am afraid we might get into a worse fix. However, I
trust in your great sagacity. If you act on it you cannot make a
mistake.
One more word, if you don’t mind, concerning the good
Marsiglia. The other day I felt pity for her, poor soul. She could
not hold back her tears when you told her that you are not
1 Caterina Gerosa’s aunt, who stood in the way of the division of the property.
