In the end you will be happy about it». As far as I am
concerned, I know only too well that it serves me right that you
leave, since I have responded so poorly to your fervent
exhortations and to the concern that you have for my spiritual
good. However, I have promised God that if he hears my
prayer I will respond much better in future. What if the Lord
through this cross is expecting something from you too? ...
I beg you not to mind my boldness which, I admit, is far
too much, but if you have indeed to blame me for it, you must
also blame your humility that makes me have the courage.
To tell you the truth, I greatly fear that you may be about
to fall in some serious illness, and so I earnestly beg you to be
calm and not worry so much.
Leave everything to God, and He will make you happy. He is
so good that He will never abandon those who serve Him, and
with more reason those who seek to do His will. Besides, God
will not reject the prayers that so many people are offering to
him over this matter.
On my part I have also told the girls of the Sodality of St
Aloysius to pray hard for this purpose, without telling them the
exact reason, and their fervour is such that it makes me hope
that God will hear their supplications.
Finally, in one way or another, God is bound to comfort you
and all those who are most hard hit by this blow.
Now I must beg you to forgive the liberty I have taken to write
in this manner. I myself realize that I have done a thing that
does not concern me at all, but I would like you to know my
