INTRODUCTION NOVENA OF MARIA BAMBINA 2020

This year we wish to live the novena of the feast of the Nativity of Mary entering into your houses to bring to you directly her smiling face and her blessing hand.

  • Each morning we wish to start the day with a glimpse into the history that explains the meaning of the feast and narrate briefly how the image of Maria Bambina arrived in Milan in our Shrine, Via Santa Sofia.
  • In the evening, we invite you to be in communion with us, those who desire, to pray the Rosary and celebrate the Eucharist during the Novena to Maria Bambina and
  • also through our website, the novena to Maria Bambina, inserted in the recitation of the Vespers to facilitate who desires to pray (all days except 7th September, it is in Italian along with the text in English. On 7th it is in English)

Can the spirituality of Maria Bambina still be of help in this changing world that makes us feel evermore small and fragile?

We shall have some light if we let ourselves be questioned by the history of the devotion to Maria Bambina and maybe we shall also discover how much Mary can speak to our lives as believers today.

Glimpses into a History

INTRODUCTION

The reflections are chosen from the text Feast of the Nativity of Mary from the East and the West of Georges Gharib, who starting from the origin of the feast, explains its deep meaning and concludes affirming, “the nativity of Mary is a constant invitation to joy”.

From the text The History of the image  Sr Albarica Mascoti we can understand briefly how the effigy of Maria Bambina came to us sisters “by a providential plan”, confirming that Maria Bambina has accompanied right from the beginning of our Institute’s journey.

 ROSARY AND EUCHARISTIC CELEBRATION

They will be published in our website: Canale Youtube Maria Bambina

In the Eucharistic celebration reflections will be offered on the theme: Mary, Seat of wisdom, pray for us; may the one who treasured meditating in her heart the words and life events of Jesus intercede for us the gift of wisdom.

In the centenary year of the birth of St. John Paul II we meditate on Redemptoris Mater, encyclical letter on Blessed Virgin Mary in the life of the pilgrim Church.

Vespers of NOVENA MARIA BAMBINA

NOVENA OF MARIA BAMBINA 2020: “Mary, ‘littleness’ in the hands of God”

Ninth Day: 7 September

O God come to my assistance
O Lord make haste to help me.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit
as it was in the beginning, is now
and ever shall be world without end. Amen.

Hymn:  Hail, thou star of Ocean!

Hail, thou star of Ocean!
Portal of the sky!
Ever Virgin Mother
Of the Lord most high!

Oh, by Gabriel’s Ave,
Uttered long ago,
Eva’s name reversing,
‘Stablishing peace below.

Break the captive’s fetters;
Light on blindness pour,
All our ills expelling,
Every bliss implore.

Show thyself a mother;
Offer Him our sighs,
Who for us incarnate
Did not thee despise.

Virgin of all virgins!
To thy shelter take us;
Gentlest of the gentle!
Chaste and gentle make us.

Still as on we journey,
Help our weak endeavour;
Till with thee and Jesus
We rejoice forever.

Praise to God the Father,
Honour to the Son,
In the Holy Spirit,
Be the glory one.
Amen.

Refrain.  Come let us celebrate the birthday of the Virgin Mary;
let us worship her Son, Christ our Lord.

Rejoice with me, all you who love the Lord:
in my lowliness I found favour with the Most High.
From my womb I brought forth him who is both God and man.

I was possessed by God from the beginning of his works,
before every creature, from the beginning of eternity I was created:
and even before the earth was formed and seas were not yet existing was I conceived.

Who is this that comes radiant as the sun beautiful as Jerusalem?
In her have been blessed the daughters of Zion. The queens have praised her,
and like in spring, the roses and lilies in bloom surround her..

She is exalted above the cedar of Lebanon and the cypress on the heights of mount Zion
and like choice myrrh she spreads a sweet perfume.

God has loved the daughter of Zion adorned with jewels.
The maidens seeing her, proclaim her blessed saying: like diffused ointment is your name.

You are blessed, O holy Virgin Mary, and to you every praise is due,
because from you is born the Sun of justice Christ our God.

Refrain.  Come let us celebrate the birthday of the Virgin Mary;
let us worship her Son, Christ our Lord.

Ant.   With immense joy let us celebrate the Nativity of Mary!
May she plead for us with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Today is the birthday of the glorious Virgin Mary
sprung from the seed of Abraham,

from the tribe of Judah,
from David’s noble line.

Through her has appeared to the faithful, the salvation of the world.
Her glorious life illumines the history of the people of God.

Her admirable life
gives light to the whole Church.

The Lord has regarded her humility
and to her it was announced by the angel that
she would conceive the Saviour of the world.

With joyful devotion let us celebrate
the birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

With all our hearts let us praise Christ
on this sacred solemnity of the great Mother of God.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning is now
and ever shall be world without end. Amen.

Ant.   With immense joy let us celebrate the Nativity of Mary!
May she plead for us with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Ant.   Behold the Handmaid of the Lord
Be it done unto me according to your word, Alleluia.

Psalm 126

If the Lord does not build the house,
in vain do its builders labour,
If the Lord does not watch over the city,
in vain does the watchman keep vigil.

In vain is your earlier rising,
your going later to rest,
you who toil for the bread you eat:
when he pours gifts on his beloved while they slumber.

Truly sons are a gift from the Lord,
a blessing, the fruit of the womb.
Indeed the sons of youth
are like arrows in the hand of a warrior.

O the happiness of the man.
who has Med his quiver with these arrows!
He will have no cause for shame
when he disputes with his foes in the gateways.

Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit.
As it was in the beginning is now
and ever shall be world without end Amen.

Ant.    Behold the Handmaid of the Lord
Be it done unto me according to your word, Alleluia.

SHORT READING

Littleness of Mary: LOVE OF GOD THAT BECOMES LITTLENESS OFFERED

READER 1: Then Mary said, «Here am I, the servant of the Lord; let it be with me according to your word» (Lk 1: 38). «The disciples were constantly devoting themselves to prayer, together with certain women, including Mary the mother of Jesus, as well as his brothers.» (Acts 1: 14).

Reader 2: THANK YOU MOTHER MARY,
you sense that God needs you,
of your littleness as a daughter,
as one who believes in life, against every evidence of death
and knows that the Father wants the good of his children.

ALL: WOMAN OF LITTLENESS OFFERED:
Help us to offer what we are, without fearing the risk it involves
to be a community of men and women
who against all evidence of death,
believe that a new life is possible,
in the littleness, enshrined by the Holy Spirit.

Short Response

R. Hail May full of grace, the Lord is with you.
V. Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with you.

R. Blessed are you among women and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
V. The Lord is with you.

Ant. Magnificat. Today is the birthday of the glorious Virgin Mary,
sprung from the seed of Abraham,
from the tribe of Judah, from David’s noble line.

Magnificat

Mary sang a song, a song of love,
magnified the mighty Lord above;
melodies of praise his name extol
from the very depths of Mary’s soul:

‘God the Lord has done great things for me,
looked upon my life’s humility;
happy shall they call me from this day
merciful is he whom we obey.

‘To the humble soul our God is kind,
to the proud he brings unease of mind.
Who uplifts the poor, pulls down the strong?
God alone has power to right the wrong!

‘He who has been Israel’s strength and stay
fills the hungry, sends the rich away;
God has shown his promise firm and sure,
faithful to his people evermore.’

This was Mary’s song as we recall,
mother to the saviour of us all:
magnify his name and sing his praise,
worship and adore him, all your days!

Ant. Magnificat. Today is the birthday of the glorious Virgin Mary,
sprung from the seed of Abraham,
from the tribe of Judah, from David’s noble line.

Intercessions

United together in prayer of praise let us glorify God, the all-powerful Father, who has given us in Mary a sure promise of consolation and hope. Let us pray with confidence:

Mary, full of grace, pray for us.

O God, who works wonders, you have granted to Holy Virgin Mary to share, in body and soul, the glory of risen Christ
_ lead us to eternal glory.

You, who have given Mary to be the mother, through her intercession, grant health to the sick, comfort to the afflicted, pardon to sinners,
_ grant to all peace and salvation.

You, who have made the Virgin Mary, full of grace
_ gladden us with abundance of the gifts of your Holy spirit.

Grant your church the grace to be one heart and one soul
_ may we, too, persevere with one heart, in prayer, with Mary, mother of Jesus

You, who have crowned Mary Queen of heaven,
_ grant that our departed brothers and sisters enjoy the eternal joy in the assembly of saints

In communion with Mary, mother of the Church, and aware of our fraternal bonds, let us turn to God our prayer:

Our Father

Concluding prayer
Grant to us Lord, the treasures of your mercy, and because the motherhood of Virgin Mary has marked the beginning of our salvation, the feast of her Nativity may make us grow in unity and peace. Through Christ our Lord.
May the Lord bless us and keep us from evil and lead us to everlasting life.

Our Father

Concluding prayer

O Merciful Lord, listen to the prayer of your servants; so that all who are gathered to celebrate the feast of the Mother of God, Mary ever Virgin,
may through her intercession be set free from the dangers of the present time and be admitted into the future glory. Through Christ our Lord.

May the Lord bless us and keep us from evil and lead us to everlasting life.
